Recent Accolades for Mudbrick Wines

Reserve Chardonnay 2008

Gold Medal Bragato Wine Awards 2009 (The only one awarded gold in it's class!)

Chardonnay is not a well known grape variety from Waiheke - purely because it's grown is such small amounts, and is usually so devine, it hardly gets the chance to leave the vineyard!

This rich, complex but beautifully balanced Chardonnay from the 2008 vintage was 100% barrel fermented with 30% in new French barriques. On the nose this wine displays subtle hints of citrus, peach, toasty oak and nut characters. On the palate, refined stonefruit characters are supported by rich butterscotch and savoury notes in perfect balance. The finish is crisp and lingering.

Reserve Syrah

Mudbrick has had Syrah planted since 1996 and in recent years, the variety is really begun to shine.

Our latest release - The Reserve 2006 Syrah, picked up a Gold Medal in this years NZ Royal Easter Show following two Silver medals in the Bragato and International Wine Shows last year. The wine is a beautiful expression of varietal Syrah.

Resv Syrah 06 Gold Medal WineIn the June/July edition of Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine the Reserve Syrah 2006 was awarded 91 points and judged to be in the top 5 of the tasting.

The judges commented "This is an oaky Syrah in a rather elegant style with strong, sweet flavours suggesting cassis, blackberry and cracked pepper. Appealing and accessible, it's delicious now but should develop well in bottle"

It was also recently reviewed by Neal Martin in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Magazine.

"A lively, fruit-driven nose with wine gums, white pepper , damson and blackcurrants. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance, very fine filigree tannins, notes of blackberry leaf, white pepper and damson with quite a chewy, long finish. An impressive Syrah that should drink well within 6 years. 91/100 Drink now - 2012. Tasted January 2008"

Bordeaux Varieties

Mudbrick was awarded a Gold Medal in the 2007 Air New Zealand Wine Awards for our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Resv Cabernet Suavignon 06 Gold Medal WineThis 100 % Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine our Winemaker, was particularly proud of.

"Aged for 16 months in French oak, 75% new, this Cabernet was selected from the best barrels of the vintage. Only eight barrels made the cut. Lifted intense aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry and chocolate, with finely balanced cedar notes coming from the oak. The palate has ripe full tannin structure, with sweet fruit through the middle and soft acidity. The flavours linger long after the wine has left the mouth."

We are pleased to receive more accolades from the 2007 Bragato Awards following on from the success of the 2006 Awards. From the exceptional 2006 vintage on Waiheke Island Mudbrick Vineyard has been awarded a Gold Medal for its Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, the only wine in this category to receive a Gold Medal, which makes it even better for the Mudbrick wine production team of Martin Pickering, winemaker and Jeff Le Poidevin our vineyard manager.

The 2006 Mudbrick Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been awarded a Silver Medal.

At the 2006 Bragato Awards, two wines from the very good 2005 vintage, Mudbrick Reserve Merlot Cabernets 2005 and the Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 have both been awarded Gold Medals There were only two other gold medals awarded in this category so to pick up two is very gratifying
