The Owners Bach
Circular Bay Waiheke Island
35 minutes drive from Matiatia ferry and Mudbrick Restaurant, 25 minutes drive from Kennedy Point Vehicular Ferry.
This Bach is owned by Nick and Robyn Jones, who own Mudbrick Vineyard. It is not situated at Mudbrick Vineyard. It's a long way away. It's a world away from your everyday life, or even your everyday holiday. It is Nick and Robyn's retreat, where they go with their family to get away from absolutely everything. It's a private beach at the eastern end of the Island and for the first time is now offered as a special retreat for those who enjoy absolute privacy.
If you would like to read a little about Circular Bay, Robyn discusses how it came to be below. For Rates, skip to the bottom:
It was such a special spot when we discovered it. It was totally isolated - it was landlocked so there was no road access. We asked a local man that we knew had a boat, if he would mind taking us there one day. He obliged, and I will never forget landing on the shore and clambering off the boat with the kids to explore. It was pretty hard - it was so overgrown with gorse and tobacco weed that we couldn't actually walk on the land. It appeared to be beach and cliff. However, there seemed to be a slight track that some wild animals had been using to create a little path through, so we decided to try to follow that. We had to crawl, the undergrowth was so dense. "Do you think we are crawling uphill?" I asked Nick. "No, I think this is a flat spot", he replied, and from then on, the excitement grew. We turned the kids around, much to their disappointment, they were having fun with their parents down at their level for a change. We made it back to the beach, and we thought, we could buy this. We didn't have a house at the time, we had the Mudbrick, where we had lived and enjoyed so many happy times, but when it became a restaurant, we of course had moved out, and were renting. We went home full of hope and promise again. Nick was a little concerned with the thought of buying the beach - as usual he was very good with the financial forecasts, and he told me that if we bought that beach, we would not be able to afford our own home for at least four more years. As usual, I was thinking with my gut. It should have been quite a tough decision to make, when you have two little children and of course, every woman wants her own nest if possible to nurture and grow her family. But that beach, it was just such a lovely feeling when you were there. It still does have such a wonderful energy about it. I told Nick that I would if he would. So we did. Our family and friends were shocked. "You did what?" They asked in horror. But we loved it, and this was in 1999. Since then we have worked on it.
We started by clearing a patch, and then we camped on it on Nick's 35th Birthday. Then we put a little shed on it, and invited all our friends for new years. There was no power, water or facilities, but we worked away each year. Then another opportunity arose. There was an old family cottage sitting above Matiatia bay where the ferry comes in, and the new owners wanted to remove it to build their dream home. There was a large Pohutukawa in the way, which meant that it was impossible to remove by truck, so it was set for demolition. We were offered it, and we gratefully took it, it was such a delightful little cottage, with some history attached to it, and we thought that it would be very happy in a new location but still on Waiheke, by the sea. We organised a wonderful builder to demolish the building, which he did, painstakingly labeling all the pieces of wood that were the kitchen, and so on until the whole cottage was neatly stacked in bundles. Then, he put it all back together again at Circular Bay - and there we had our cottage. Since then we have managed to get power to the site, and have built a very special retreat for people who love to get away and enjoy nature will really enjoy.
From the moment you start to wind along the coast, you start to feel it. A retreat - a complete getaway from anything urban and an entry into a luxurious coastal escape.
800m of unspoilt coastline is your private beach. It's a perfect retreat for a honeymoon, weekend breaks or romantic escapes. Nestle in to your cottage and leave the outside world behind.
