Merlot cottage has been designed as just the sort of fairytale cottage one would want to happen upon if travelling to Waiheke Island on holiday. I have often done that while travelling myself, and it seems more difficult to find than it should be! When the opportunity came up to create some accommodation on the Mudbrick property, I decided to create a fantasy, fairytale cottage – full of character and old world charm, with rustic touches and romance. I’ve had a lot of fun creating a little get-away nestled on the hillside awaiting visits from people from all parts of the world.
Throughout every part of the process, I imagined who might come along and be our visitors. Perhaps they would be young honeymooners, perhaps they might be a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary, a special birthday perhaps. I imagined husbands, wanting to treat and surprise their wives, delighted to find the ultimate get-away. I imagined stressed out couples from Auckland just managing to fit in one night away to ensure they celebrated their special occasion, albeit with not as much time as they would like. I have created the cottage so that even upon its approach, your heart feels lighter.
When I’m going on a holiday, I trawl websites looking for a character property that is going to give me “that” feeling that I’m so hoping for – preferably a stones throw from the nearest village – I don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere, I like to wander or take a short taxi ride. Our location is perfect for privacy, and is delightfully rural, yet 2mins drive from Waiheke’s main village, Oneroa. The great part about it is that if you don’t want to go anywhere, you don’t have to: breakfast is included, you can wander along the path to two different styled restaurants, casual and rustic, or upmarket and refined.
When I’m looking for accommodation, I’m also hoping that I’m going to meet a local person who is kind and giving and will help give me ideas of what to see and do on Waiheke. Bonny is our accommodation manager, and I know first hand that she’s just the sort of person that you want to meet, a local Waihekean, as we call ourselves, who will make your stay just that much more personal. She arrives with flowers for the cottage and ensures it looks immaculate, ready for your arrival. I have decorated Olive’s bedroom differently to Merlot’s, so that each little cottage has its own personality, and will attract the people that are right for them.
I hope that after looking at the photo gallery you get the feeling that your stay at the fairytale cottages will be amazing. That was really the whole point of creating them, and it’s our latest extension of what we do here at Mudbrick: we create romantic, idyllic fantasy escapes and then provide something for you to do at them – eat, drink, relax, chat, gather loved ones, and now our latest addition… wander down a winding pathway, hop into your private spa pool, then spend the night in a location that rivals anywhere in the world! I’m passionate – and unashamedly so! If we are going to be on earth with all its trials and tribulations, we need to enjoy the good times, and actually, create the good times.
